Dogs and bones are a dangerous combination – SPCA
The RandWest SPCA recently dealt with a case where a dog was suffering from a bone stuck in its back teeth.
The RandWest SPCA warns pet owners against feeding dogs bones after they received a call about a dog with a bone stuck in its back teeth.
SPCA manager René van Straten stated, “Feeding your dog bones can lead to serious health risks as highlighted in this tragic case.”
She explained they received a call about a dog that had been vomiting blood and yellow mucus for over a week.
When they arrived they noticed the dog couldn’t close its mouth and suspected it might be a jaw fracture or injury. However, upon further examination, they discovered the dog had a bone stuck in its back teeth which caused ‘ severe tooth damage, gum infection and immense distress’.

The dog was surrendered to the SPCA because its owner did not provide veterinary care for it. She will continue to take action against the owner for failing to provide medical care.
Van Straten explained feeding a dog bones can cause broken teeth as well as internal injuries and infections. It can also cause choking or blockages in the digestive tract.
“It’s important to keep bones away from your pets to prevent such painful and dangerous situations,” Van Straten pleaded.
