Gauteng Department of e-Government hosts an expo to empower the youth of Westonaria.
The Gauteng Department of e-Government recently hosted a Youth Tech Expo to empower the youth in Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
Media relations officer for the department, Gundo Maalakano, said the event, held at the Twelve Apostles Church in Trinity, offered a variety of activities.
She said those in attendance could take part in ICT skills training and entrepreneurial workshops, explore careers in the digital field and also have the opportunity to connect with professionals and mentors in the industry. Further, they learned about the latest trends in ICT development as well as digital marketing and social media.
“The expo provided valuable opportunities for internships, bursaries, skills training and employment for young people,” said Gundo.

He added the expo was first launched in 2022. They also partner with key stakeholders in the field. He noted since the start of the expo, over 100 people have benefitted from it.
MEC for e-Government Bonginkosi Dhlamini added, “The expo highlights our commitment to empowering the youth of Gauteng. By supporting initiatives like this, we are helping to shape the next generation of tech leaders and ensuring that Gauteng remains a hub of innovation. Our partnerships strengthen our collective efforts to create a brighter future for our youth.”
He also stated they support youth from all backgrounds, in particular the ones facing unemployment challenges in townships, informal settlements and hostels.
The stakeholders that supported the event included Nemisa, First National Bank, Telkom, Providence Software Solutions, Motswanelo IT Consultant, Evolve IT Solutions and the Gauteng Department of Treasury.
“These partners contributed to creating a positive environment for learning and skill development,” said Gundo.

Social media influencers were also in attendance, including TikTok comedian Thabo Kgaphola, better known as Summary Wa Lehetla and amapiano TikTok dancer Chad Jones. Thabo then educated the youth on how social media can change their lives and support their families.
“As a young man from Orange Farm who started with nothing, I can testify that social media allowed me to transform my life, through this, I also believe that it can do the same for you if utilised in a right manner,” he said.
Young participant Tumelo Mofokeng expressed his gratitude for the event and encouraged fellow attendees to make the most of the opportunity.
“I’m grateful to the department for hosting this amazing event. I urge everyone here today to take full advantage of this opportunity to learn and grow. We never know what great opportunities could come from events like this,” Tumelo said.
