This is unacceptable — resident to Traffic Department
Resident wonders why he cannot get an appointment for his driver's license after having to rewrite his learner's test twice.
Hendrik Jansen van Vuuren is growing increasingly frustrated with the Randfontein Traffic Department after struggling for years to obtain a driver’s license for his scooter.
Jansen van Vuuren explained that he first wrote his learner’s test for his 150cc scooter in 2021 and successfully passed. However, when he attempted to book a test date for his driver’s license, no appointments were available.
Eventually, his learner’s license expired, forcing him to rewrite the test. Once again, when he tried to book a driver’s test, he was unsuccessful. His driving school informed him that the only available test dates were in Johannesburg or Pretoria, but he could not travel that far on his scooter.
Determined to find answers, he visited the Randfontein Traffic Department to enquire about the issue.
“When I went to the department, they told me there were no available appointments. One of the workers even told me that I would have to keep rewriting my learner’s test because I would never get a driver’s test appointment,” he said.
He also mentioned that the testing station’s machine had been broken for more than three years.
“Until it is fixed, I won’t be able to get an appointment. What happens if traffic officers pull me over and fine me for driving without a license? How am I supposed to drive to Pretoria or Johannesburg on a scooter?”
Jansen van Vuuren’s learner’s license has since expired again on February 14, and he has decided not to rewrite the test a third time.
“This is unacceptable. I already have a driver’s license for my vehicle, but I need one for my scooter. How many times must I write these tests before I can finally get my license?”
The Randfontein Herald has attempted to contact the Randfontein Traffic Department, but no contact information is available on their website. The only listed email address was used, but the message was returned as undeliverable, stating: “I’m sorry to have to inform you that your message could not be delivered to one or more recipients.”
Additionally, the Herald reached out to the Rand West City Local Municipality to request a contact person for the department. However, no details have been provided as of yet.
If a response is received, a thorough update will follow once the Traffic Department has commented.
