Gone too soon, but never forgotten

The community of Toekomsrus mourns the death of Johannes (Joe) Bowker, who made a huge impact not only in the boxing ring but through his charitable work too.

Husband, father, mentor, trainer and leader. Johannes (Joe) Bowker passed away at the age of 91, leaving behind an entire community that respected him for his numerous charitable achievements.

Joe’s funeral took place at St Martin de Porres Catholic Church on April 9. As beautiful hymns echoed in the church, hundreds of residents gathered to pay their respects and mourn the loss of a man who made a significant impact in the community.

Joe’s son, Ricardo Bowker, explained that his greatest contribution to society was giving without ever expecting anything in return. Born in 1934, Joe experienced many historic events; however, he will also be remembered as a vital part of Toekomsrus’ history.

Ricardo further expressed the specific values that Joe upheld, saying, “I don’t have silver or gold, but I have unconditional love to give, always.

“He was always excited to celebrate his birthday and didn’t expect any gifts. The only gift he ever wanted was for his children and grandchildren to be with him on his special day. He would always show us his boxing skills,” Ricardo said.
