Mandla Nelson, who was known as DJ Mdoko, is mourned by residents.

Born in 1985, he started school at Bulelani Primary and completed his schooling at AB Phokompe Secondary. His passion and love for entertainment took him to Merafong, where he became a household name in the entertainment industry, from DJ to promoter. His legacy was clear considering the presence of many in attendance, including Merafong City Deputy Mayor Mogomotsi Sello.

It was so sad to receive the news of Mdoko’s death, whom I knew back from school days at AB Phokompe,” Sello said.

Jonkie, a gospel artist from Merafong, said Mdoko’s death is a serious loss, while DJ Gipla Thole also expressed his sorrow.

“I’m at a loss for words because he used to get me gigs in areas of Khutsong and Carletonville. We used to play sets together on many occasions, and he made me feel at home when I was in Merafong,” Thole said.

DJ Miss Jones from Westonaria remembers many of the gigs where she exchanged decks with Mdoko including the Go West gig at Donaldson Dam where she opened up the set for DJ Zinhle where Mdoko was the stage compere (master of ceremonies).

I truly lack the words to describe the impact of this sudden loss,” Jones added.

“As a family, we were looking forward to more from him, considering that he was to celebrate his fortieth birthday,” said friend Johnny Masinga.
