According to hospital spokesperson Melanie van Staden, this year’s global theme was Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for nurses strengthens economies.

In celebration, the hospital invited nurses for breakfast and lunch served by the nursing management team and unit managers. Messages of appreciation and reading the nurses’ pledge of service also formed part of the celebration.

International Nurses’ Day is an important date on our hospital calendar as it allows us to honour and celebrate our nurses for their incredible commitment to excellence in patient care.

“Nurses not only work hard to provide quality care through their clinical expertise, but they also go above and beyond to lend a listening ear and provide a compassionate touch. It is their heartfelt care and dedication that truly sets them apart,” expressed hospital manager Dr Marinda Overbeek.

“We value the person, not just the profession. This year’s theme serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of appreciating our nurses. We take immense pride in being a patient- and people-centric profession. When we empower our nurses and strengthen their well-being, we enable them to provide even better care for our patients,” Overbeek continued.

Furthermore, Van Staden explained they offer numerous initiatives aimed at supporting nurses beyond professional development. This includes an Employee Wellness Programme (EWP) that offers free counselling services to support emotional and psychosocial health. Overbeek also mentioned that the EWP provides guidance on legal and financial matters, empowering nurses to thrive both personally and professionally.

She also emphasised other important initiatives such as ensuring workplace safety, sponsoring nurses’ professional association fees, offering competitive salaries, and embedding a culture of zero tolerance against gender-based violence.

Caring for our nurses through these various initiatives is important, as they are the heart and backbone of our hospitals. They deserve support in what is often a demanding work environment,” she said.

“Today serves as an opportunity to thank the local community for placing their trust in our nurses and hospital services. Let us continue to value and respect our nurses every day.”

In line with International Nurses Day, Life Healthcare runs its annual Great 100 Nurses initiative, recognising the top 100 nurses chosen by their peers for their efficiency, quality, compassion, and enhancement of the patient experience.

“We congratulate all of this year’s nominees and winners,” Overbeek said.

Van Staden ended the celebrations by asking those in attendance to take a moment to reflect on the incredible contributions made by their nurses and commit to supporting them in their essential roles.

Together, we can ensure a brighter and healthier future for our community and the world,” Van Staden said.
