67 minutes of hope for aspiring musicians and dancers

Semamotra Music and Entertainment NPC joined hands with local artists to help young musical talents find hope for a better future.

Artists give their 67 minutes to discover new young talent

Kocksoord — The Semamotra Music and Entertainment non-profit company (NPC) gave children from lower-income communities the opportunity to showcase their musical skills at their recent outreach for Mandela Day.

Kim Semenya, one of the founders, explained that they started the NPC in 2022 with the intent of reaching out to people who are struggling. She noted they host events for the community every Mandela Day without fail.

Everything is paid for out of their own pockets, and moving forward, they hope to make the events bigger. On July 18, they invited two artists, Fly Boy and Bad Boy Mo, to share their stories as inspiration for the children.

“I love music and I want to take care of the community. I will be managing the children who attended the event. I hope something good will come of this joint venture,” said Kim.

She explained she decided to reach out to these children after delivering second-hand clothes to their area a while ago and noticed their many musical talents.

Fly Boy, a hip hop artist and producer who was also nominated for the Best Hip Hop Artist at Ghana Premium Awards, shared his dedication to inspire young children.

“I come from Kagiso, and there aren’t many opportunities. It took me 15 years to get where I am. I would like to show children it is possible and encourage them not to turn to drugs and other criminal activities.”

He added that after all his hard work, his songs have appeared on TV, radio, and he has even appeared in a magazine.

One of the children who attended, Percy Hlongwane (13), added, “I feel happy to be here and show my talent. I want my dance to be something my mother can be proud of.”

Alulutho Tyelentombi (14), another young guest at the event, shared his dreams.
“I want to travel and work overseas. I would like to carry the values of respect, discipline, patience and loyalty that I’ve learned with me and never lose focus on these things.”

The children also received a hot meal during the event, and what was left over was given to whoever needed it.

“We plead with the community to reach out and help us. We can only do so much,” said Kim.
