Cow rescued from sewer, later euthanised
Rescue efforts end in heartbreak as SPCA forced to euthanise neglected cow found in sewer.
After receiving a call for help from Friends of Rescued Animals (FORA), the RandWest SPCA rushed to assist in rescuing a cow that had been trapped in a sewer for four days, but ultimately had no choice but to euthanise.
RandWest SPCA manager René van Straten explained that when they arrived, the team from FORA was doing everything possible to get the animal back on its feet; however, the cow was too weak. She also had no teeth left and suffered from what was described as “a clear sign of ‘prolonged malnutrition and exhaustion.
René continued a nearby herd indicated the cow had an owner, which was confirmed by a bystander and eventually they were able to get the owner’s details. The owner, however, didn’t offer any assistance, instead accusing René of racism.

“Given the cow’s prolonged suffering, critical condition and the complete lack of owner support, the decision was made, in full agreement with all the teams that were present, to humanely end her suffering. I then carried out the euthanasia with compassion and the carcass was removed,” said René.
She added: “Since then, the only response from the owner has been insulting messages, but not a single inquiry or gesture of care has been made.”
René confirmed that a case of neglect will be opened against the owner.
She thanked the FORA team for their hard work trying to save the cow, stating their dedication and compassion did not go unnoticed.
