Unplugged coding hits West Rand schools

Through the Coding4Mandela initiative, Tangible Africa empowers West Rand learners with coding skills, critical thinking, and creativity — no computers required.

Tangible Africa is making significant strides in introducing Unplugged Coding to schools across the West Rand.

According to programme coordinator Evidence Mokoena, the initiative, launched in late July, called the Coding4Mandela tournament, featured schools such as Kingswood Academy, Laerskool Ebenhaeser and Giant Christian Academy.

“Through this innovative approach, learners are equipped with essential 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving and creative thinking, all without the use of computers,” Evidence explained.

She added that the initiative is inspired by the values of Nelson Mandela and continues to grow each year, aiming to expand its reach to even more schools in the region.

“Tangible Africa introduces children to coding concepts via games that are simple to understand and entertaining to play. Our multi-stage mobile platform is purposefully designed to facilitate group problem-solving and promote digital competency. Unplugged Coding proves that technology education can be made accessible to every learner,” Mokoena explains.

“With just a grid mat, we can teach the principles of coding and empower children at every level,” Evidence added.

She concluded that the efforts not only celebrate Mandela’s legacy but also ensure that no child is left behind in the rapidly evolving digital world.

A coding quiz was held by the initiative to test the learners’ knowledge on coding and Giant Christian Academy would eventually be victorious.
