Crimson sky over Randfontein
Randfontein’s night sky recently turned crimson as a rare blood moon rose during a breathtaking total lunar eclipse.
On September 7, residents gazed at a red moon that filled the sky during a phenomenon known as a total lunar eclipse.
The eclipse began at around 18:00, finally reaching its best potential at 20:00 and colouring the town with a red hue. Residents were treated to a full blood moon, which they could enjoy.
According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), during a lunar eclipse, the Earth lines up perfectly between the moon and the sun, which temporarily hides the moon from any sunlight, thus causing a red glow.
NASA mentioned there are three types of eclipses, including partial, annular and total.
