Greenhills family loses home in blaze

Greenhills family loses home in fire and appeals to the community for urgent help.

Rand West Emergency Services responded to a fire at a flat on a property in Rietbok Street, Greenhills, today, September 16.

According to fire chief Benny Mohlabeng, the blaze has since been extinguished.

“Unfortunately, three rooms outside the main house caught fire. Thankfully, no injuries were reported. The exact cause of the fire is still unknown,” he said.

Resident Christopher Pretorius, who lives in the flat, told the Randfontein Herald that he was in the kitchen with his wife when they suddenly heard someone screaming. “Something is wrong,” he recalled thinking.

The fire forced Pretorius, his wife, and their three children out of the home. The children were playing outside at the time and were unharmed.

Pretorius explained that he stayed with his mother and grandmother in a house at the back of the property, which is now flooded with EMS workers. The kitchen and bedrooms of the main house were completely destroyed.

The family is appealing to the community for help:

“We have lost everything. We are asking for any donations to help us,” Pretorius said.

Anyone able to donate necessities such as food, clothing, or blankets can contact Pretorius on 081 288 4787.
