Proudly Tsonga: Francinah celebrates her roots and traditions
Francinah Mabaso Majola (61) proudly shares her Tsonga heritage, from colourful traditions and cultural dishes to the values she lives by.
Sixty-one-year-old Francinah Mabaso Majola is deeply proud of her Tsonga heritage, which she celebrates every year with great joy.
Growing up, one tradition in particular stood out for Francinah – the art of traditional Tsonga cooking. As a child, she was taught how to prepare cultural dishes, with pap served with Mopani worms (pethelele) being a staple at most celebrations and ceremonies.
Her favourite meal as a child was peanuts with meat, although she explained that this dish is rarely served today. Another dish she enjoys is fried biltong, which she often buys from street vendors.
Francinah also spoke fondly about the vibrant traditional attire, explaining that Tsonga clothing is characterised by its bright and colourful decorations and that any colour can be used to make their outfits stand out.
“I am proud to be a Tsonga woman because I was born this way. Both my mother and father were Tsonga, so it is something I carry in my blood. My absolute favourite thing about the culture is that we never leave anyone behind,” she expressed.
While she fully embraces her heritage, Francinah also emphasised that she is a born-again Christian who believes in Jesus Christ. She currently serves as an archbishop in her church and enjoys teaching others about God.
