From security officer to rising star: 21mics inspires with new Hip Hop hit
The singer and rapper shares his journey from struggle to success with his latest motivational track.
Twenty-three-year-old Aobakwe Senokwanyana, best known as 21mics (moneyiscomingsoon), has released his latest song as he continues his climb toward Hip Hop success.
He was raised in the North West province, where he started singing at the age of six. His grandmother supported his talent by taking him to Sunday school, where he first discovered his singing ability. His skills were further sharpened when he began performing at his primary school assemblies. During this period, Aobakwe described himself as outgoing and well-liked by his teachers and fellow learners.
Aobakwe explained that his stage name is a metaphor for the various genres he can perform, with the number 21 representing the number of genres he can cover. To expand his creativity, he experiments with multiple genres but feels most comfortable performing Hip Hop. He also occasionally performs Trap and Club-inspired music, blending in elements of Amapiano. Overall, he believes he can master any genre he chooses.
Some of his biggest inspirations include 50 Cent, Tupac Shakur and South African rapper Hip Hop Pantsula, while Canadian singer and rapper Tory Lanez has strongly influenced his sound.
He has already released his new song, My Success, on various platforms, including YouTube and Spotify.
According to him, the song features a Hip Hop and Trap-style beat and explores his personal struggles.
“It explains the pain I went through alone – the struggles of unemployment. At that time, it was hard for me to get a job to improve my life. I then earned my security grade and was finally hired as a security officer. Things have since become much more positive. That is why the song is called My Success,” he explained.
One of his biggest challenges while recording the song was finding the funds to release it, but he eventually saved enough money to make it happen.
“I stay inspired by listening to my favourite artists on repeat. I hope listeners can hear my song and take away its message of motivation,” he said.
He is currently working on another song that explores serious themes of distrust. Although not much information has been revealed yet, he noted that it will feature another local artist.
“Music is in my blood. I am music,” he concluded.
