Jannas head boy appointed West Rand district PRO
Hoërskool Jan Viljoen head boy Luthando Mpanjukelwa has been appointed West Rand District RCL Public Relations Officer
The head boy of Hoërskool Jan Viljoen, Luthando Mpanjukelwa, has added another milestone to his leadership journey after being appointed public relations officer (PRO) for the West Rand District Representative Council of Learners (RCL).
The deeply spiritual young leader from Toekomsrus credits his faith in God as his guiding light.
“I had asked God for direction in my life, but wasn’t sure if my prayers were meant for me. This appointment showed me that this role was meant for me,” he said.
Growing up in Toekomsrus was not easy, he explained, as the community is surrounded by negative influences such as gangsterism and substance abuse, which now affect schools in the area.
Luthando, who was raised in a single-parent household and has overcome personal challenges, including past involvement in harmful behaviours, said he recognised the need to change his path a few years ago.
“I was mischievous and influenced by friends into negative behaviour. I kept it hidden from my mother and teachers. One day, I realised the man I was becoming and knew I had to turn my life around,” he said.
He redirected his energy into academics, sport and cultural activities.
“I play for the school rugby team, which reached the district finals last year, and I’m in the hip hop crew, J Squad, which won R10 000 at this year’s Gouefees festival. I also participate in the chess club,” he added.

The responsibilities of being head boy have helped prepare him for the expectations of his new district role.
As PRO, Luthando will represent learners across the West Rand, promote the work of the RCL, communicate with schools, and ensure learners’ voices are heard.
At Hoërskool Jan Viljoen, he has earned the respect of teachers and peers alike, with his dedication to leadership, discipline and service cited as key to his district appointment.

On his plans, Luthando said, “I want to go to varsity, but I’m taking time to meditate and let the Lord guide me. This year, I aim to be the best president I can be, to excel in sports, academics and culture, and to walk in alignment with the Lord’s will.”
Balancing his roles as head boy and district PRO, Luthando remains focused on representing learners with integrity and ensuring their voices continue to be heard across the West Rand.
