It has since been confirmed that he is safe and back in the care of his loved ones. Beneke had gone to the home of an old friend he knew from his time as a policeman. Due to his condition, he does not remember how he got there or the events leading up to it.

The incident highlights the vulnerability of elderly people living with dementia, as well as the importance of swift community response. It has also raised discussions around safety measures at care facilities to help prevent similar incidents.

Family spokesperson Valerie Dorfling expressed gratitude to everyone who assisted in spreading the word and helping ensure his safe return.
