Safety first this Easter: Gauteng committee issues holiday warning

The Portfolio Committee reiterates its call for all residents to enjoy a meaningful and safe Easter period while remaining aware of their surroundings and safety.

The Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety extends warm Easter wishes to all residents of Gauteng.

The committee encourages a safe, peaceful, and blessed weekend as Christians across the country commemorate the passing and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

On behalf of Committee Chairperson Bandile Masuku, spokesperson Thebe Khumalo said, “As we celebrate this sacred period, we call on all residents to prioritise safety, particularly on our roads and in public spaces. Let us use this time to come together as communities in respect, unity, and compassion.”

Khumalo added that this period of reflection and renewal is a time to promote unity, compassion and respect for one another.

The committee further noted that Easter is typically marked by increased travel and urges all road users to exercise caution and responsibility.

“Motorists are reminded to follow traffic rules, avoid reckless driving and never drive under the influence. Law enforcement agencies will maintain a visible presence across the province to ensure compliance and enhance public safety,” Khumalo said.

The committee further expresses serious concern over a reported incident in which a 16-year-old boy was allegedly shot and killed by a police officer.

While the circumstances are still unclear, the committee takes the matter very seriously.

Khumalo added, “The tragic report of a 16-year-old boy allegedly shot by a police officer is deeply concerning. We welcome the IPID investigation and stress that accountability must be ensured through a transparent and thorough process.”

The safety and security of all residents, particularly vulnerable groups such as women and children, remains a priority.

Khumalo concluded, “While we wish everyone a joyful Easter, let us remain vigilant and responsible. Incidents like this highlight the need for professionalism and adherence to the highest standards of conduct by law enforcement officials.”
