AGM shock as SPCA struggles for committee members

The RandWest SPCA is urgently appealing for community members to step up after a poorly attended AGM left it struggling to fill critical committee roles.

The RandWest SPCA is facing a growing leadership crisis after a poor turnout at its recent annual general meeting (AGM), where only four people came forward to serve on the committee.

At a time when the organisation is already under pressure, the lack of community participation has raised concerns about its sustainability.

According to current committee member Brenda Eloff, the SPCA has only five active members – far below what is needed to effectively oversee operations, fundraising and animal welfare services.

The AGM, expected to attract residents willing to take on governance roles, instead highlighted the scale of the challenge, leaving the organisation critically understaffed at the leadership level.

Eloff said committee members play a vital role in ensuring the SPCA functions effectively.

“These voluntary positions involve providing oversight, contributing to strategic decisions and supporting the day-to-day running of the shelter. Without sufficient members, key functions such as financial management, service coordination and long-term planning are severely impacted,” she said.

She added that the shortage persists despite ongoing appeals for community involvement, with repeated calls for residents and animal lovers to volunteer their time and skills.

“The potential consequences of inaction are significant. The SPCA assists hundreds of animals every month, including cases of abuse, neglect and abandonment. Without a fully functioning committee, these essential services could be compromised, leaving vulnerable animals without support and the community without a critical welfare organisation,” Eloff said.

Residents are urged to step forward and help sustain the SPCA, as its future increasingly depends on stronger community involvement.

Those interested in serving on the committee can contact Eloff at finance@spcarandwest.co.za. Further details on responsibilities are available on the organisation’s social media platforms.
