Weekend weather alert: Rain, wind and cold conditions forecast nationwide

Temperatures are set to drop sharply while strong winds, heavy rain and rough seas create hazardous conditions across much of the country this weekend.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned of cold, wet and windy weather expected to affect much of the country from April 17 to 20.

Forecasters Lehlohonolo Thobela and Tokelo Chiloane said the change is linked to two consecutive cold fronts making landfall over the western parts of South Africa. The systems will initially affect the Western and Northern Cape before spreading eastwards across the interior over the weekend.

“From Friday, cold, wet and windy conditions will dominate the western interior, including parts of the Western and Northern Cape. Significant rainfall, strong winds and a noticeable drop in daytime temperatures are expected. By Saturday, the cold air mass will move further into the central interior as the front shifts east. Widespread cool to cold conditions are expected across much of the country, with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers in the Free State, North West, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and KZN,” Thobela said.

By Sunday, cold, wet and windy conditions will extend to the eastern and southern parts of the country, including coastal areas.

Daytime temperatures will drop sharply, with some high-lying areas in the western interior possibly reaching only 10–12°C. Strong winds will add to the wind-chill effect. In contrast, the far northern regions are expected to remain relatively warm.
