Herald distances itself from circulating fake front page
A suspicious front page using the Randfontein Herald name is making the rounds online, but multiple red flags confirm it is not authentic.
The Randfontein Herald has become aware of what appears to be the front page of a publication dated Wednesday, 6 May 2026, circulating under its name, titled Randfontein Herald, particularly via Facebook.
The newspaper confirms that this publication is not affiliated with its editorial team in any way. Despite efforts, the original source of the image could not be traced after it was shared on social media.
While the name “Randfontein Herald” appears on the publication, several inconsistencies immediately raise red flags. The layout and typography deviate significantly from the newspaper’s established design standards, making it clear that it is not an authentic edition of the publication.

Further scrutiny reveals that the headline is highly sensationalised and does not align with the ethical standards set out in the South African Press Code, to which the Randfontein Herald adheres. In addition, multiple sections of the text contain grammatical errors and awkward, nonsensical phrasing features commonly associated with AI-generated content or poorly constructed mock-ups.
The imagery used in the publication also appears suspicious. Although the scenes depicted, including people, vehicles and lighting, may initially seem realistic, closer inspection suggests a slightly artificial and staged quality, often seen in AI-assisted visuals.

While the Randfontein Herald remains a legitimate and trusted local newspaper serving the West Rand community, these discrepancies strongly indicate that the so-called “breaking news” story is fabricated and does not reflect a real event.
In contrast, verified coverage from the Randfontein Herald this week has focused on credible and pressing issues affecting residents, including significant fuel price increases and ongoing local crime prevention operations. Current reporting highlights steep hikes in petrol and diesel prices impacting consumers, as well as coordinated law enforcement efforts leading to arrests and the recovery of stolen vehicles in the region.
Readers are encouraged to rely only on official platforms and verified editions of the publication for accurate news and updates. The public is urged to exercise caution when engaging with unverified content online and to avoid sharing misleading or potentially harmful misinformation.
