Commuters stranded as overhead cable damage disrupts rail line

Train services between Randfontein and Roodepoort have been suspended after five spans of overhead cable were damaged at Milsite, forcing commuters to seek alternative transport while repairs are underway.

Train commuters travelling between Randfontein and Roodepoort were left stranded on May 19 following a major service disruption caused by damage to an overhead cable at Milsite.

According to Metrorail spokesperson Lillian Mofokeng, the disruption was caused by an overhead cable cut, with Protection Services confirming that five spans of the cable had been damaged. The incident is believed to be linked to cable theft or vandalism and has significantly affected operations along the route.

The fault at Milsite led to the immediate suspension of train services between Randfontein and Roodepoort until further notice. Metrorail’s Protection Services and Electrical Department were promptly notified, and technical teams were deployed to assess the damage and begin repair work.

Rail authorities have not yet provided an estimated time for the restoration of services, leaving many daily commuters scrambling for alternative transport arrangements.

Commuters should note that trains are still operating between Johannesburg and Roodepoort.

Passengers are advised to follow official commuter rail communication channels for updates and further developments.
