Winter drive brings hope and warmth to Montrose settlement

A community-led initiative has brought winter relief to informal settlement residents, with fitness trainers and volunteers joining forces to collect and distribute essential clothing and school items.

A Winter Clothing Drive held in the Ko Sporong community, also known as the Montrose informal settlements, has brought much-needed relief to residents through a collaborative initiative led by the Modimo O Teng Foundation.

According to the founder of the foundation, Kopano Hosene, the project was made possible through the support of Tshepang Masake (Mr Fit Masake) and Modisaotsile Diphoko (Tsheio Performance), both gym trainers who played a key role in mobilising the fitness community to contribute towards the cause.

“The initiative went beyond a traditional donation drive, with contributions being collected through specialised training sessions and fitness classes. Participants were encouraged to donate essential goods as part of their involvement, turning physical training into a form of community upliftment,” Kopano said.

Fitness community drives donation effort

Kopano added that the drive successfully collected and distributed winter clothing and footwear for all ages, school uniforms, school shoes and toys aimed at bringing comfort and joy to children in the settlement.

He further explained that the aim was not only to provide immediate relief during the cold winter period but also to foster a sense of community support, consistency, and upliftment among residents facing difficult living conditions.

“Mr Fit Masake and Tsheio Performance were credited for using their influence within the local fitness community to encourage donations, with strong support also coming from social media followers and gym members,” Kopano continued.

Call for continued community support

The foundation noted that residents in informal settlements continue to face significant hardship during colder months, making initiatives like these essential in providing both material support and encouragement.

Going forward, the organisation further stated that it hopes the success of this project will inspire other local businesses, fitness groups and organisations to explore innovative ways of contributing to community development.
