Jannas reaches for the stars at YCAP

Hoërskool Jan Viljoen High School delivered outstanding results at the Gauteng West Youth Citizen Action (YCAP) district rounds, claiming the overall trophy and multiple category awards.

Last month, the district rounds of Gauteng West’s Youth Citizen Action (YCAP) programme took place at the Gauteng Provincial Archives Centre in Kagiso, where Hoërskool Jan Viljoen High School delivered outstanding results.

According to Jannas deputy principal, Bianca van der Schyff, YCAP encourages the youth to be active citizens of the country.

“The learners of Jan Viljoen had to identify a problem in their environment during the district rounds and work to solve it. They created a portfolio and recorded the steps which they were given in the Toolkit,” she explained.

She added that the Grade 11s chose the topic ‘Why our classrooms need a digital future’ and they managed to take home first place. The Grade 9s’ topic was ‘Cyber addiction’, which earned them third place. In the junior category, the Grade 8s took on the topic of ‘substance abuse’. They eventually landed second place.

Overall, Jan Viljoen High School secured the trophy for being the best school.

Learner Cyreenah Banoo participated in the Nkosi Albert Luthuli Young Historians’ Prize (INKAL) Oral History competition, which was a story-writing component and took second place.
