New era of discipline at Riebeeckrand

The new head of discipline at Riebeeckrand brings experience, structure and a firm hand to the school.

Hoërskool Riebeeckrand High School has reinforced its commitment to providing a safe and structured learning environment with the appointment of Deon Greyling as the school’s new head of discipline.

Greyling, who started his tenure this year, brings 16 years of experience in school discipline from various schools across the West Rand.

Based in Riebeeck, the school has long emphasised strong values and character development among its learners. Discipline is considered a cornerstone of education and personal growth, guiding learners to become responsible and respectful members of society.

On his vision for discipline at the school, Greyling said, “The school currently has a good structure in terms of dealing with discipline. My role is to support the teachers, helping them implement the rules and giving them someone to call if situations get out of hand.”

In his new role, Greyling is responsible for upholding these standards while promoting a culture of accountability, respect, and fairness. He will oversee learner conduct, address behavioural issues, and work closely with educators, parents, and the school management team to maintain a positive school environment.

Greyling also highlighted the role of parents in discipline.

“Discipline starts at home. The school enforces what should be instilled by families. Parents should regularly communicate with teachers about any behavioural issues their children may have,” he said.

He added that while most parents are receptive to the school’s discipline measures, about 10% are not, often single parents who tend to overprotect their children. In such cases, he encourages other family members to play a mentorship role and guide the child.

The head of discipline position is vital to creating a focused atmosphere where teaching and learning can thrive. Greyling’s appointment reflects the school’s ongoing dedication to ensuring that its policies and values are consistently upheld.

“With this renewed focus on discipline and character building, Riebeeckrand continues to take steps to shape well-rounded learners prepared for the future,” he concluded.
