Bodybuilder at 70 and still going strong

He's 70 and is in better shape than those years his junior.

Bodybuilding veteran Arnold Schwarzenegger said, “The mind is the limit. As long as the mind can envision the fact that you can do something, you can do it, as long as you really believe 100 per cent.”

And one Randfontein man is the embodiment thereof. Willie Fourie decided, on his 70th birthday, to once again pick up his weights, starting bodybuilding and his progress is something people 50 years his junior wish for.

Willie Fourie lost his big belly after training for 10 months at the age of 70.
Willie Fourie lost his big belly after training for 10 months at the age of 70.

Willie used to train in his youth, participated in a few body-building competitions, and did well. He stopped training after he sustained a shoulder injury.

He said he sustained the injury while trying to see how heavy a weight he could bench press, resulting in a frozen shoulder injury.

Willie explained after he stopped training, he lost weight but gained a big belly. He decided to take up training again on his birthday with his grandson as an exercise in grandfather-grandson bonding.

Only a few months later, Willie has managed to completely lose his belly and is in better shape than those years and years his junior.

Willie is a retiree. He retired in March last year, but now that he’s taken up training again, he’s been offered a job at the Muscle and Fitness Academy (MFA) in Greenhills.

Willie said his secret to being in great shape at 70 is that he doesn’t drink, smoke or even eat junk food.

He supplements his training with pre- and post-workout drinks and is a lifter of heavy weights. He believes in high repetitions during a set and makes sure he does cardio every workout.

He trains with his grandson, Christiaan Kent, and both have had explosive gains during the past few months of training.
