Youth prevails over experience for Class T title

... and Rautenbach/ Howie win the Production Vehicle category to preserve Toyota's record.

Youth prevailed over experience in Class T of the Atlas Copco Gold 450, the seventh and final round of the 2016 Donaldson Cross Country Motor Racing Championship, which finished at the Kloof Country Club in Glenharvie on Saturday, 29 October.

Driver Jason Venter and his navigator, Vince van Allermann (in a 4 x 4 Mega World Toyota Hilux) clinched the title ahead of the more experienced Chris Visser and Ward Huxtable (in the Neil Woolridge Motorsport/ Ford Performance Ranger), who placed third. Gareth Woolridge and his navigator Boyd Dreyer, also in a Ford Ranger were second in the Class T category.

In a close finish in the Special Vehicle category, Dave McShane and South African rally champion Elvéne Coetzee, who navigated for the Australian in the final three events of the season, came in first in a Fox Racing Porter. McShane thus became the first overseas competitor to win a Donaldson series national title by clinching the Class A driver’s title.

• Class FIA – Conrad Rautenbach with navigator Robert Howie (Toyota Hilux): position 1
• Production – Conrad Rautenbach with navigator Robert Howie (Toyota Hilux): position 1
• Class P – Werner Kennedy with navigator Thinus Venter (Aceco): position 1
• Class S – Ronald Graven with navigator Lohan Chris Faber (Toyota Hilux): position 1
