Young athletes to represent Gauteng

'We do not compete, we lead.'

“We do not compete, we lead,” is Boabab Athletics Club’s motto. Time and time again they live up to it.

Four young athletes from the club will be representing the town as well as the province in Durban.

They will be participating in the prestigious Track and Field Sub-Youth Inter-Provincial Athletics Meeting at Kings Park Athletics Stadium in Durban.

The club is based in Mohlakeng and is largely made up of child athletes who are trained at grassroots level to be the best of the best.

Their coach, Ofentse Ntibane, has had years of experience on coaching as well as sports-management level and said he has poured all of his time into the young athletes to see them go as far as they can push themselves.

The club has minimal resources and some days they don’t have a proper track to train on.

“We make do with what we have and still get results. It doesn’t help to complain. We’re still shaping good athletes. Sometimes if we find an open field, we’ll just go and train there,” Ofentse said.

The following athletes will compete in Durban:

• Diedre Bata – Girls U/9 (60 metres)
• Lesibe Dikgole – Boys U/9 (60 and 80 metres)
• Buhle Ndlovu – Boys U/10 (80 and 100 metres)
• Bokang Mabote – Boys U/11 (1 200 metres)
• Lerato Dibaba – Girls U/12 (800 and 1 500 metres)

These five athletes put in two hours of training a day, Monday to Friday, and finally their hard work has paid off.

For more information on the club, Ofentse can be contacted on 074 562 7733 or at email ofentse9@gmail.com.
