Dancing from Greenhills to Vegas

The studio offers hip-hop, tap and modern dancing.

Snap Back Studios is situated in the heart of Greenhills where founder Eileen Levey and her business partner, Madelien Gersback, run the show.

Although this dance studio started small, they are growing day by day. When the Herald visited them, Madelien was teaching little boys and girls, who moved amazingly well considering their age.

The studio offers hip-hop, tap and modern dancing. Modern dancing is a free, expressive style of dancing that developed in the early 20th century as a reaction to classical ballet. In recent years it started including elements not usually associated with dance, such as speech and film.

Hip-hop dance refers to street dance styles primarily performed to hip-hop music, or street dance styles that have evolved as part of the hip-hop culture. It includes a wide range of styles, primarily breaking, locking and popping, which were created in the 1970s and made popular by dance crews in the United States.

Tap dancers wear shoes fitted with metal taps. Tap dancing is characterised by rhythmical tapping of the toes and heels.

Eileen told the Herald that their studio is not just for children and teenagers, but also for adults.

Eileen herself started dancing at age three, doing ballet. Both Eileen and Madelien have solid dancing and teaching backgrounds. Madelien’s teaching skills are out of this world, and she really gets onto the children’s level, while teaching them in a fun way how to dance.

The most popular dance styles at the moment is hip-hop, and of course crew.

Eileen en Madelien have already had a lot of success with their dancers. At the Roodepoort Dance Festival in September last year, all 14 crews and individual dancers achieved podium places while four dancers managed to stun the judges and received special awards.

During the SA Hip-Hop Championships at Allen Glen High School in Roodepoort, both crews received podium places. The junior crew, Cream, danced their way to the top when they landed first place in the amateur division. After giving their best, the senior crew, Chivalry, received the title of runner-up in the amateur division.

During March 2017, these crews will compete on regional level in Cape Town, in hopes of being selected to compete on international level in Las Vegas in the United States.

With the talent and teaching skills that Snap Back Studios has, Las Vegas is truly on the horizon.
