Protea colours on the horizon for Mohlakeng athlete

A young athlete from Mohlakeng is following in the footsteps of Wade van Niekerk, having finished a 400m event in a time of 50 seconds recently.

Phumzile Mqolo, 15, an athlete from Mohlakeng, is slowly but surely proving to be a Protea of the future.

The Grade 10 learner from AB Phokompe Secondary School took part in the 400m event for U/18s at the SA Junior Track and Field Championships held in Cape Town during April and finished in a time of 50 seconds.

Baobab Athletics Club coaches Ofentse Ntibane and Paska Mabote believe Phumzile can follow in the footsteps of SA 400m stars such as Bobang Phiri (also from Mohlakeng and an Olympic competitor) and Wayde van Niekerk – current world record-holder in the 400 metre event with a time of 43 seconds.

“We are working on Phumzile one day at a time. Age and time is still on his side as he is just 15 years old. It is just a matter of time to enhance his physical and psychological fitness,” Paseka said.

Ofentse added, “We are delighted with what we saw at Phumzile’s first ever SA Championship appearance. He really has a dream to compete on the international stage.”
