Indigenous games kept kids off the street

An NGO in Mohlakeng kept kids busy and off the street during the school holidays.

Children from Motjuwadi in Soweto and its surroundings were kept busy during the winter holidays, thanks to a school holiday programme by Matebogo Le Thato Home of Hope, an NGO from Mohlakeng.

“We thank Pastor Lebogang Lebeko from the Zion Centre who offered us the venue to host indigenous games and keep the kids busy and off the streets during the school holidays,” said Linda Amanda Meyambo, chairperson and founder of the NGO.

“Kids participated in games like Kgati (a skipping rope game in which several girls can skip the rope simultaneously or one at a time) and morabaraba (a traditional two-player strategy board game) and learnt some soccer skills from coach John Motsumi, deputy chairperson of Matebogo Le Thato Home of Hope.

“We hosted the programme out of our own pockets as we did not have sponsors. We did this through passion and out of love for the kids. We hope that next time we will have sponsors or some form of help,” added Mamokete Pharumele, the treasurer of Matebogo Le Thato Home of Hope.
