From the court to the road for Superkids

The Superkids volleyball players in Mohlakeng traded the court and nets for the saddle and road as an alternative way of keeping fit during lockdown.

The streets of Mohlakeng and parts of Randfontein recently saw a peloton of young cyclists take on a 30km ride.

The group departed from the Mohlakeng tennis courts and rode to Krugersdorp West.

Superkids coach Mushi Mogapi explained the ride was an alternative way to keep his volleyball players fit considering matches, training and even events had been scaled down due to Covid-19 lockdown regulations.

“It was the first time some of them cycled, but the players did rather well. Also, youngsters are facing a difficult time at the moment, especially girls who are vulnerable to social ills such as abuse and gender-based violence,” Mushi said.

“Cycling was a way of keeping them active, free and in a way protected. As coach I have a responsibility not only to coach, but to keep a watchful eye on them as a father and guardian.”

Mushi further thanked the Department of Sport, Art, Culture and Recreation’s Philasande Muveve for her role in facilitating the financial contributions in order for them to use the bikes, as well as the Lottery.

“We do, however, need more financial support for professional bikes and gear, including helmets. If there could be some form of assistance from other sponsors or donors it would be much appreciated.

“Cycling to us has since become one way to stay active during the off-season and lockdown. We now intend to enter events such as the 947 Ride Joburg and other major cycling events.”
