Helicopter landing and rare soccer action in Mohlakeng

There was some rare soccer action, skill and a helicopter landings at the Rigamani Construction Top 8 Masters Challenge in Mohlakeng recently.

Sport fans were treated to some rare soccer action, considering the pandemic, when the Patrick Pule Ace Ntsoelengoe Stadium played host to the Rigamani Construction Top 8 Masters Challenge recently.

The two-day soccer event saw former soccer players, both amateur and professional, go head to head with the likes of former Jomo Cosmos player and now coach Bongane ‘Ace’ Duiker, Kelebogile Mabe (former Orlando Pirates player) and Alen ‘Deco’ Lebyane (former Free State Stars and Stellenbosch United player).

Everyone was also treated to a rather unusual moment on the soccer pitch – said to be seen only in other global sporting events such as the NFL Super Bowl in the US – when a helicopter landed with the trophy. Getting out the helicopter and carrying the prize trophy was none other than Abe Montoedi, chairman of the Greater Randfontein Easter Soccer Tournament (GREST) and local businessman.

“When Abe told met that they wanted to host an event of this kind I did not see a reason to hesitate. As a resident we were willing to go the extra mile and make this event happen for Mohlakeng. I want to be part of community upliftment. Another of my several projects that I have embarked upon is the car wash where I have employed youngsters involved in drugs,” said Oupa Rigamani whose Rigamani Construction business is based in Aureus.

“Through this soccer event I am calling upon other local businesses to get on board in terms of community upliftment and development.”

The final was a local derby between Ma Hippy ‘Hippies’ Masters and Oasis Masters. Hippies eventually won the match 4–2 on penalties.
