RandMark to take on 947 Ride Joburg

RandMark is proud to have a couple of newbies among the members to take on this year's 947 Ride Joburg (road event) on November 21.

For the first time since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, members of the RandMark Run, Walk, Cycle Club will take part in the annual 947 Ride Joburg road event on Sunday November 21.

The cyclists will start at the FNB Stadium and finish at the same venue after riding a loop of 97km around Johannesburg.

“The 947 Ride Joburg is the prime road race of the season for RandMark Run, Walk, Cycle Club and we’re very excited; I mean, what could be better than riding 97km through the streets of Joburg?” asked Club spokesperson Lee Kotze.

She further explained that the 2020 edition of the famous race had to be cancelled; the same happened to the Cape Town Cycle Tour and Cape Epic, which were postponed to later this year.

“RandMark is proud to have a couple of 947 Ride Joburg newbies. These riders were putting in the long hours required to complete the event within the time limit. And then of course there are RandMark riders who try to improve on their personal best each year.”

Asked about the morale among members of the club, Lee said in comparison to the previous years, everyone seems to be relaxed.

“It might be due to the lack of racing for the past two years, as well as the route that has been adapted. Of course there are those who’ve been training quite hard and hope for a personal best, but in general the morale is relaxed and the riders are excited to enjoy the event and riding through the streets of Joburg,” Lee added.

She also thanked Blue Bottle Liquors for their sponsorship; adding that this year will be the third time the retailer is backing them.

“The 947 Ride Joburg is the prime event for RandMark each year. This is the only event where all RandMark cycling members turn up and give it their best. We are also proud of our runners who took up cycling and entered the challenge. Every year RandMark pitches up a couple of gazebos, bring the Braai Master along, and after the event we camp on route to support the riders still on the road. It is our biggest ‘gees’ race of the year,” Lee said.
