Rand West City Walk For Purpose in aid of cancer

Despite the gloomy weather, the third annual Rand West City Walk For Purpose still gathered many supporters.

Despite the gloomy weather, tons of community members came to support the third annual Rand West City Walk For Purpose.

The walk started from the Greenhills Stadium where the crowd took to the streets of Randfontein on either a 2,5km or 5km walk in aid of cancer survivors and to remember those who sadly lost the battle.

During the event there were also donations of approximately 40 clothing items and 200 sanitary pads made which will be distributed where needed.

Organiser of the annual event Meshack Mnyakeni said this campaign is designed to create cancer awareness and remove the stigma and fear attached to it by making social services, particularly testing and screening, easily available.

“It serves as an eye opener to ordinary people to recognise the early signs and symptoms of cancer and enabling them to seek treatment at an early stage. The route chosen this year enables such an objective, we intend to involve more stakeholders so to rally them behind the call for a public oncology centre.”

This years walk was in joint coordination between Zalas for Life, Pillars of Strength, Rand West City Local Municipality, Randfontein Police, Department of Sports, Department of Health, Pillars of Strength, Arebueng, Cogta, Colossus Athletics Club, West Rand PCO, Donjuliano Athletics Club and Rand West Parliamentary Constituency Office.

The community was eager to start the race despite the gloomy weather.

Meshack said considering the weather, the event was a great success and the cherry on top for him was to see survivors and cancer activists who where there when this journey begins.

“The reason for the event was that he lost his wife in 2017 who was diagnosed with a Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) and his passion for a public oncology centre, which will assist survivors across the West Rand.

Apart from the walk, there were also health checks done, aerobics, soccer, tug of war and stalls.

“On the behalf of the team Rand West City Walk for Purpose, I would like to appreciate the unconditional support received this year. Your commitment is unquestionably overwhelming,” said Meshack.
