Teen hockey player has big goals

A young hockey player has another goal besides hitting the back of the net – to represent her country.

Greenhills — There is no stopping Lulama Mokoena on the hockey field. The 16-year-old from Randfontein High School (RHS) dreams of representing the national women’s team one day.

The left winger said her passion for the game started at an early age.

“I was in Grade Three and realised the sport is for me.”

Mokoena enjoys spending time with her teammates and always strives to score at least one goal every match.

“I have developed some skills I never thought I had and am proud of my achievements,” she said.

According to her, contrary to an adrenaline rush, hockey makes her feel relieved, comfortable and valued. She added that hockey gives her hope which drives her to succeed.

“As a team, we are there for each other. There is no ‘I can’t’, only ‘I can’,” she concluded.
