Firefighters lace up and complete Soweto Marathon with ease

Firefighters wore their athletic clothes to illustrate the importance of fitness.

Firefighters Eucley Mlangeni and Thabo Nkoe made waves at the recent Soweto Marathon where they promoted keeping fit and protecting the community.

Eucley from the Randfontein Fire Department finished the marathon with a time of three hours, 53 minutes and 37 seconds while Thabo from the Krugersdorp Fire Department finished with a time of four hours, 33 minutes and 42 seconds.

Both of them completed a 42.2km race in the 20 to 39-year-old male category where they started and finished at Nasrec Expo. The firefighters ran for the Colossus Aerobic Athletics Club.

“There were so many uphills and the weather was hot and blistering. Even though we endured cramps and the fear of failure, we still finished the race with endurance and determination,” Eucley expressed.

For both of the athletes, it was exciting to see runners from all corners of the world helping and pushing each other to the finish line, regardless of their race.

“The support and love shown to the athletes by the people of Soweto and surrounding areas was so motivating. Law enforcement also supported runners by making sure they are safe from motorists,” he concluded.
