A nutcracker of a performance
Beyond the Barre Dance Academy in collaboration with Dans Africa Youth Company put on a creative display of storytelling during a production at the Roodepoort Theatre.
Beyond the Barre Dance Academy showcased their talents on stage during Selah’s Nutcracker Adventure production at the Roodepoort Theatre.
Ilse de Bruyn of the dance academy said the theatre was filled with ‘enchantment’ on March 14 and 15 and the production was a collaboration between Beyond the Barre Dance Academy and the Dans Africa Youth Company.
This unique reimagining of the beloved Nutcracker story transported audiences into a world of wonder, bravery and love,” said Ilse.
She continued to explain the story of Selah’s Nutcracker Adventure.
“At the heart of the production was Selah, an orphan living on the streets with her best friend, Lucy. Life was harsh, but Selah’s courage and kindness never wavered. In a magical twist of fate, the Nutcracker whisked her away to the Land of Sweets, setting her on a journey filled with adventure. Traveling through each realm, Selah encountered whimsical characters who gifted her with wisdom, strength, and treasures to carry forward.

“As she finally reached the Nutcracker’s grand castle, she discovered that he had been transformed back into a man. In a heartwarming conclusion, he asks Selah to stay with him, but she kindly declines his offer and returns home to her friends on the street. Back on the streets, she uses everything she learned and gained in the Land of Sweets to turn life’s lemons into lemonade and ends up buying the old church she once slept next to, and turning it into a house of Safety for children living on the streets.”
She noted what made the production so special was the cast which ranged from three-year-old dancers to 30-year-old dancers. Dancers from King’s and Queen’s Day Care and Rappies Preprimêr also took part in the production.

“Seeing young children share the stage with seasoned dancers highlighted the inclusive and nurturing spirit of the production. The performance masterfully blended classical ballet with contemporary storytelling, captivating audiences of all ages. The dancers’ skill and passion shone through in every scene, bringing Selah’s journey to life in a breathtaking display of artistry,” continued Ilse.
She added the production reminded everyone of the ‘transformative power of dance’ through their creative and inclusive storytelling.
Ilse concluded, “Selah’s Nutcracker Adventure was more than just a ballet, it was a celebration of resilience, hope, and the magic of new beginnings.”
