Preacher turns runner
Seventy-four-year-old athlete continues to inspire the masses by doing what he loves – running and preaching for God.
Michael Botha (74) from Toekomsrus became a marathon runner to inspire people who are living in a stressful environment. He now wants to show that focusing on exercise can benefit a person physically, mentally and spiritually.

During his high school years, Michael liked to swim. However, after joining the swimming team, he soon lost interest. When he turned 21, he found God and decided to live according to the Bible.
As a result, Michael preached the Gospels everywhere he went. He also became a preacher.
“When I turned 68, I did a lot of prayer walking. That was when I realised that exercising gives me time to speak to the Lord. Running for Bibles spoke to me.
So, I began prayer jogging and I immediately knew this was what I wanted to do,” Michael explained.
One day, his son-in-law decided to register Michael for a marathon.
“From then on, I started competing in marathons. This is my second time completing the Soweto Marathon. I managed to finish the 42.2km race in just under five hours this year. I regard this as an achievement because I want to inspire others. I was inspired by my son-in-law and I gave it a shot. Now, I want to inspire others,” he expressed.
He added that he specifically wants to inspire people who are going through a difficult time because running can benefit a person physically, mentally and spiritually.
“As Paul said: ‘Run the good race’. I always dedicate my running to prayer. The Bible teaches us that nature shares valuable lessons,” he said.
He shared further that his training lessons can be challenging at times. He usually wakes up early morning (about 05:00) and gives himself a target for his running practice. He uses a combo that consists of running 32km every day for three consecutive days. Thereafter, he takes a day to rest.
A resting day is vital for recovery. The body also needs nourishment.”
He advised everyone to search for a hobby that keeps them fit and healthy.
“You have to persist and press on. Anyone willing and obedient can do this,” he concluded.
