Senior citizens’ soccer stars eye Gauteng Golden Games glory

Rand West City’s senior women roared back from defeat with a crushing 6–0 win over Merafong City at the West Rand Golden Games.

After suffering a 3–0 defeat to Mogale City, Rand West City bounced back in style with a 6–0 victory over Merafong City during the West Rand Golden Games women’s soccer match at the Kagiso Sports Complex.

“We had all the resources to beat the Mogale senior citizens’ ladies. We seem to have lost the match because some of the players did not meet the required over-sixty age group category, but the Mogale team knows we have beaten them in the past,” said Fridah Keet, Rand West Ladies Senior Citizens player-coach.

While it was a tough outing for the women’s team, the Rand West City Male Senior Citizens had it easy, as they had no opponents to play against, which means they will be representing the West Rand at the Gauteng Golden Games in the Vaal on September 5.

“We are ready for the games. Last year, we reached the semi-finals in a dubious decision by the referee, and the age of our opponents was questionable at Ruimsig. This time, we have a strong team. The Rand West team includes former professional players Ernest Ntsoelengoe, who played in the top flight for Vaal Professionals and Lusitano, as well as Noble Maja, who once played for Moroka Swallows and is now a pastor at Zion Centre,” Fridah said.

“If push comes to shove, we can add more firepower with Donald ‘Ace’ Khuse,” added Captain Alli Mokobane.

He concluded by noting that Ace Khuse recently won one of the Mayoral Awards during the State of the City Address.
