Rugby fever kicks off at Riebeeckrand today

Riebeeckrand’s 30th birthday is honoured with a thrilling day of schoolboy rugby today, February 26.

Excitement is building as U13 rugby teams from across the West Rand and surrounding areas prepare to compete in a long-standing primary school tournament hosted by Hoërskool Riebeeckrand High School today, February 26.

The tournament, which has been running for 30 years, coincides with Riebeeckrand’s 30th anniversary celebrations this year. A total of 14 primary schools will take to the rugby field this afternoon in what promises to be a competitive and action-packed event.

According to Riebeeckrand’s sports manager Matt Snyman, the much-anticipated tournament will allow young players to showcase their skills, teamwork and sportsmanship. Primary schools from Randfontein, including Westgold, Laerskool Randfontein and Laerskool Rapportryer, are expected to participate, offering rising rugby stars a chance to compete in a structured and challenging environment.

Snyman added that the tournament plays an important developmental role.

“This will give learners a great idea of how big a high school field is. It will also be great preparation for the season ahead,” he said.

He continued that the tournament is aimed at developing grassroots rugby and that high schools have a responsibility to support and assist primary schools where possible.

Parents, teachers and community members are encouraged to attend and support the young athletes from the sidelines. The event is expected to create a vibrant atmosphere filled with school spirit, cheering supporters and plenty of action on the field.
