Randgate Boxing Club shapes champions and changes lives

For over five decades, the club has been a cornerstone of youth development in Randfontein, helping aspiring boxers build skill, discipline and confidence.

For more than five decades, the Randgate Boxing Club has stood as a pillar of discipline, opportunity and hope in Randfontein – and at 55 years strong, its impact continues to grow.

Founded on a passion for boxing and community upliftment, the club has become a nurturing ground for young amateur boxers looking to hone their skills and build a future in the sport.

Under the leadership of owner and head coach Willie Gonsalves, the club has not only produced talented fighters but has also created a safe space where young people can develop confidence, discipline and self-respect.

The club regularly hosts and participates in development tournaments, giving aspiring boxers valuable ring time against competitors from across Gauteng. These platforms are crucial in helping fighters test their abilities, gain experience and measure their progress as they climb the ranks of amateur boxing.

Over the years, the club has operated largely through passion and dedication, often offering training opportunities to those who may not otherwise be able to afford them.

However, sustaining this legacy comes with its challenges. Gonsalves has made an appeal to local businesses and the broader community to support the club and its athletes – particularly when it comes to sponsorships for tournaments.

“Support from the community can make a real difference,” he emphasised, noting that sponsorships help cover essential costs such as transport, equipment and competition expenses.

“I have never asked any fighter for a cent; everything we do at the boxing club is for the upliftment of the community. I have around 28 fighters from Toekomsrus and surrounding areas, but I can not afford to pay for all of them for their accreditation and transport, and these are very talented youngsters.

So I would like to encourage businesses and individuals to come on board and help sponsor the fighters.”

The club now looks forward to hosting the Gauteng Development Tournament this Saturday, 6 June, where boxers from all over the province will battle it out.

As the Randgate Boxing Club looks to the future, its commitment remains unchanged – to develop champions both inside and outside the ring, and to ensure that every young boxer who walks through its doors is given a fighting chance at success.
