Tournament highlights rising boxing stars
Boxers of all ages stepped into the ring at Randgate Boxing Club, delivering an action-packed tournament that showcased rising talent and the growing strength of amateur boxing in Gauteng.
Boxers of all ages stepped into the ring to display their fighting skills during a spirited day of competition.
The Gauteng Development Boxing Tournament brought excitement and showcased raw talent at Randgate Boxing Club on May 2, which formed part of ongoing efforts to grow amateur boxing in the province.
The tournament featured bouts between young up-and-coming fighters as well as more experienced competitors. Development tournaments such as these are designed to give boxers valuable ring time while helping them measure their progress against opponents from different clubs across Gauteng.

From the opening bell, the atmosphere was electric, with supporters enthusiastically cheering on local talent. Young boxers demonstrated courage, determination and eagerness to learn, while older and more seasoned fighters displayed refined technique, discipline and strong ring awareness. The variety of age groups created a dynamic event where experience met ambition, highlighting the depth of boxing talent developing across the region.
Similar tournaments hosted at Randgate in the past have attracted participation from clubs across areas, including Krugersdorp, Kagiso and Pretoria, reinforcing the event’s role as an important platform for provincial competition, talent identification and athlete development.
Randgate Boxing Club owner Willie Gonsalves praised the tournament for providing a safe and competitive environment where athletes can grow, gain confidence and prepare themselves for higher-level competitions.
“We had boxing clubs from Ekurhuleni, Sedibeng, Pretoria and the West Rand represented at the tournament. Unfortunately, not all the clubs could make it, but what’s good is that we were able to put together 20 competitive fights on the fight card today,” Gonsalves said.
Community support also played a significant role in the success of the event, with residents turning out in numbers to support the fighters and promote the sport within the community.
The success of the tournament once again underlined the importance of grassroots boxing initiatives in nurturing future champions, with many of the young participants showing strong potential to progress to elite levels in the years ahead.
