The DA brought soccer fever to the Ace Ntsoeleng Stadium in Mohlakeng over the weekend of July 18 to 19 by hosting a community soccer tournament in celebration of Mandela Day.

The tournament attracted teams and supporters from across the West Rand.

Eight teams competed for top honours: 11 Days FC (Zenzele), Mistake FC (Simunye), Los My Cherry FC (Mohlakeng), Toekomsrus FC, TP Mazembe (Dan Tloome), Manchester FC (Randfontein), Afrivilla Pride (Afri Village) and Sivuseni FC (Bekkersdal).

The tournament kicked off with exciting group and knockout matches, setting the stage for a competitive weekend of soccer.

Supporters filled the stands as local players showcased their skills, determination and community pride. The competition intensified as the tournament moved into the semi-finals, leading up to the final on July 19.

The final saw hosts Los My Cherry FC take on a determined 11 Days FC side in a closely contested match. Both teams scored, with the game ending 1–1 after regulation time and being decided by a penalty shootout.

Los My Cherry FC kept their composure from the spot, defeating 11 Days FC 3–2 on penalties to claim the tournament title and earn the bragging rights that came with the victory.

DA mayoral candidate Jacques Julius said the tournament was held to promote positive activities among young people.

“We are here to celebrate Mandela Day, and what better way to do it than with sport? The aim is to encourage young people in the area to stay away from drugs and crime and focus on the positives in society, like sport,” he said.

Julius added that his plans included making the tournament an annual event.

The event not only showcased local soccer talent but also promoted unity and community spirit, with residents coming together in large numbers to support their teams and celebrate the game.
