Teine finish top after dominant win over Alberton
Randfontein Rugby Club ended their Grand Challenge League campaign on a high note with a strong away victory over Alberton, as the first team secured a 35–21 win to clinch top spot and build momentum heading into the playoffs.
Randfontein Rugby Club delivered a commanding all-round away-game performance against Alberton Rugby Club in their final Grand Challenge League fixture, this past Saturday, July 25.
The victories across multiple teams capped off a successful league campaign, with the club’s first team securing a crucial win that sees them finish top of the log heading into the playoffs.
It was a mixed day for the junior sides, with the U19 team going down 75–19 in a tough encounter, while the U21 side fought hard but ultimately fell short, losing 38–29. Despite these setbacks, the senior teams rose to the occasion and ensured Randfontein left Alberton on a high note.
The third team set the tone with an emphatic 33–3 victory, showcasing dominance on both attack and defence. The second team followed up with a narrow but important 19–14 win, displaying resilience under pressure.
The highlight of the day came from the first team, who secured an impressive 35–21 victory to seal their position at the top of the Grand Challenge League standings. Winger Renaldo Visser led the charge with a brilliant brace, crossing the try line twice. He was well supported by Michael Tolmay, Wessel van Staden, and Rudi Marx, who each added a try to the tally.

Captain Keagan Fortune was flawless with the boot, successfully converting all five tries in a perfect kicking display that proved vital in maintaining the scoreboard advantage.
Teine will now look forward to having home ground advantage when they play their quarter-final game on August 8 at Greenhills Stadium. Randfontein’s opponents will be decided after this coming weekend’s results. Assistant coach Hennie van Eck has pleaded for residents to show up in their numbers as the team represents the whole town.
“We need everyone in our town to come and support the club. Greenhills Stadium needs to be packed on the 8th,” he urged.
Teine advancing would be a massive feat not only for the team but also for the town and local sports.
The result this past weekend not only underlines Randfontein’s strength and consistency throughout the season but also gives them valuable momentum as they head into the playoffs as log leaders, with their sights firmly set on championship glory.
