What bites at the Berg en Dal Loop

Berg en Dal has become a popular choice for those looking to sight these elusive creatures.

In the hilliest region of the famous Kruger National Park lies Berg-en-Dal Rest Camp with its spectacular views of mountain terrain. Surrounding the park is a network of roads used by park rangers, private safari companies, and self-drive visitors. But there are two routes that stand out above the rest.

The Steilberg Loop takes you to one of the highest points in this area of the Kruger, offering expanse views of the hills and valleys – something you would associate with the Kruger. The mountain bushveld is a lot more complex than the rest of the Lowveld, comprising mainly of granite and gneiss. The rocky outcrops and upper slopes are relatively fertile and favorable to trees. It is here that you will be able to sight wildlife like white rhino, mountain reedbuck, wild dog, klipspringer, and buffalo. Birds often spotted in the Berg en Dal area include the African hawk-eagle, scarlet-chested sunbird, pied kingfisher, white-browed robin-chat, and mocking cliff-chat.

The S110 road from Berg-en-Dal Rest Camp loops for 22 kilometers through the upper catchment area of the Matjulu watercourse. This route is well known for leopard sightings, with many leopard lairs present in the hills of the Matjulu Loop. Berg en Dal has become a popular choice for those looking to sight these elusive creatures.

Other wildlife to be seen along Berg en Dal’s Matjulu Loop include kudu, giraffe, impala and duikers. Beneath the Matjulu Hill is a waterhole where white rhino often come to drink; while wild dog, kudu, and giraffe are sometimes spotted.

Lion are often found on the roads leading to Skukuza and Crocodile Bridge, ticking off all of the Big Five.

Berg en Dal Rest Camp, which overlooks the Matjulu Spruit, offers visitors the opportunity to self-drive the park or explore the area on guided bush walks and game drives offered by the camp at an additional cost. With their incredible knowledge of the park and wildlife, the rangers ensure that visitors see as much as possible during their stay. Whether you choose to go camping or stay in one of the self-catering chalets, Berg en Dal provides good facilities for families, couples, and even solo travellers to enjoy.
