NPO to tackle mental health issues at seminar
An awareness seminar to highlight issues surrounding mental health and how to best deal with it will be held in Mohlakeng on October 15.
The Ikhaya lentuthuko sanctuary is committed to tackling issues around mental health and will be hosting an awareness seminar at the St John the Divine Orphanage Centre in Mohlakeng on Saturday, October 15.
Ikhaya lethuthuko is a non-profit organisation and the event will be an effort to highlight issues surrounding mental health and how to best deal with it.
Scheduled to start at 09:00, the event is expected to attract the services of psychologists, life coaches and two speakers who have direct and relatable stories regarding mental health.
According to Ikhaya lentuthuko founder and chairperson Phindile Sibiya, more needs to be done to address mental health – which sometimes leads to unfortunate cases of suicide.
“We have come to realise there is limited information with regards to mental health and not everyone has access to resources which equip them with adequate knowledge about mental health. We’ve also noted that the most vulnerable people who need help with mental health are the people who do not have the affordability to book themselves in for therapy. So obviously, if they are unable to do that then they wouldn’t be able to get the help that the need. This is where we come in,” said Sibiya.
The event is free of charge and the theme is blue and white.
Homosexuality will also feature as a topic of discussion on the day.
“This will be to look at how some members of the community tend to bash homosexuality and how this can contribute to issues around mental health,” added Sibiya.
