International Nurses Day is observed annually on May 12 to recognise the valuable contribution of nurses to healthcare systems worldwide, as well as to commemorate the birth of modern nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale.
At Lenmed Randfontein, the occasion was marked with a warm and welcoming brunch where nurses were given a well-deserved break from their demanding schedules. The atmosphere reflected gratitude and unity, with hospital management expressing sincere appreciation for the compassion, resilience, and dedication shown by nursing staff.
Inspiring student nurses and personal journeys
Student nurses at the hospital were also recognised.
Mukona Mudau, a second-year student, said she was inspired to pursue nursing by her mother, who is also a nurse. She explained that seeing her mother’s passion for the profession motivated her to follow the same path.
She added that nursing is not an easy profession, as it requires a strong understanding of medicine and human anatomy to properly assist patients.

Challenges and perspectives in nursing
Tumelo Galane, a male midwife and anaesthetic nurse at the hospital, spoke about the challenges he faces in his role, noting that some patients are not always comfortable being assisted by someone of the opposite gender. He said he works to make patients feel comfortable and, where necessary, involves a female nurse in consultations or procedures.
Speakers at the brunch acknowledged the long hours, emotional demands, and strong commitment required in the profession, describing nurses as the backbone of the healthcare system. Their role in patient recovery, support, and overall well-being was highlighted as essential to the hospital’s mission of delivering quality care.

Appreciation and recognition of nursing staff
Bernedette Fourie, the nursing service manager, emphasised the importance of nurses in the community, noting that they are human beings who often work long shifts to care for patients. She added that appreciation from patients and the community goes a long way in recognising their efforts.
In addition to the celebratory meal, the event included messages of encouragement and recognition, along with small tokens of appreciation presented to staff as a gesture of gratitude for their ongoing service.
The celebration served as a reminder that behind every patient’s journey to recovery is a nurse whose dedication helps make healing possible.
