“This is one among many ways that the University gives back to communities and students.”
The Kgosi Mampuru women’s prison received a donation of books and a computers this week from Unisa.

“It said the donation will go a long way in ensuring that it serves the inmates enrolled with Unisa and other higher educational institutions,” she said.
“This is one among many ways that the University gives back to communities and students.”
The donation establishes a dedicated Unisa service centre or hub as an extension of the existing normal Unisa regional services centres.
The involvement of Unisa with prisons is seen as its community engagement and capacity building initiative.
“We also use such initiatives to form partnerships in areas of research and using correctional centre facilities for practical and experiential learning through the college of education,” added Dr Johnson.
“Unisa therefore offers the opportunity to inmates to learn within their confinement while contributing effectively to ensuring the education of registered Unisa student-inmates are addressed through a computer-based infrastructure.”
Prison management thanked Unisa for the donation.

“Unisa addressed one of our many challenges where. Our library had needed more books to enrich teaching and learning activities for both the educationists and students.”
Johnson said the relationship between Unisa and the prisons dated back many decades ago.
“We continued to grow from strength to strength by helping each other.”
