More than 500 babies delivered on New Year’s Day

The births of 280 girls and 251 boys were recorded.

Gauteng province witnessed the delivery of a whopping number of 531 babies on New Year’s Day.

At a regional and district hospital 260 births were recorded, with 112 of them being boys and 148 girls.

Gauteng Health Department spokesperson Philani Mhlungu said community healthcare centres were able to record 120 births, 63 boys and 57 girls.

Steve Biko Academic Hospital spokesperson Lovey Mogapie said the hospital recorded 6 births, 2 boys and 4 girls.

At Dr George Mukhari Hospital one set of twin boys was born, which levelled the number of boys and girls at 11 and the total number of of babies born to 22.

Life Wilgers hospital spokesperson, Ineke Jonker, said their hospital delivered two births on the day.

The Tshwane District Hospital also recorded two births.

Spokesperson Zandile Mthimunye said one was a boy and one a girl.
