Riegat police visit schools to raise child trafficking and domestic violence awareness
Two learners came forward to report abuse after they were assured about their safety.
A visit by Rietgat police to a local primary school to raise awareness about issues such as domestic violence and child trafficking proved to be fruitful when two learners came forward to report abuse.
“They came only forward after they were assured about their safety,” said police spokesperson Captain Stephen Maluleka.
About 130 learners were reached when the station visited the Tsaroga Phoka primary school in block BB on Thursday to spread awareness about child trafficking, gender-based and domestic violence.
Maluleka said their focus was on grade 4 and 5 learners.
Over 400 pamphlets were handed out during the visit.

Police also visited grade 6 and 7 learners at Pulamadibogo primary school in block Y on Friday.
“We focused on the older boys and girls and told them to be careful and to report any violence,” said
“We want to inculcate a culture of safety to the children while teaching them to take care of others.”
Maluleka said the school’s principal welcomed the visit and appreciated the partnership while a representative social worker from the Department of Social Development also engaged with the learners.
The local CPF and the Rietgat SAPS’s youth desk also formed part of the visit.
