Three men accused of stabbing Mams man in the neck abandon bail application

The three accused were arrested on the day of the incident and have been in custody since.

Three men accused of murdering an 18-year-old Mamelodi man by stabbing him in the neck abandoned their bail application at the Mamelodi magistrate’s court on Wednesday.

Answer Bongani Chauke (22), Ignatius Mahlogonolo Chabangu (21) and Tshepang Titus Bilankulu (18) are facing charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances and the murder of Mabutho Jenamo from Mamelodi.

Hundreds of community members, learners from the Reneilwe community learning centre and local organisations gathered outside the court welcomed the decision taken by the three accused.

Ward 23 councillor Hendrick Mashao said, “we are happy with the police investigations and how the court is handling the case”.

He said the community’s commitment to see justice for the victim says a lot as more people want to sign a petition aimed at not allowing the court to grant the three bail.

“The leadership of ANC Women’s Brigade and 4+1 taxi association also came on board to support Jenamo’s family,” said Mashao.

“The taxi association supported the community by providing transport for the learners and community to come to court and support the family with other logistics.”

He further encouraged the community to continue supporting the family until justice prevails.

NPA regional spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said it was alleged that on January 16 Jenamo was walking home from school with three friends when they met the three accused.

“It is alleged that when one of the accused pulled out a knife, his friends ran away. The three men grabbed Jenamo and told him to hand over his phone,” said Mahanjana.

They proceeded to assault him and stabbed Jenamo in the neck with a knife.

“He started running, but the accused chased after him and tried to stab him again from behind but failed to do so due to the backpack he was wearing.”

Jenamo was taken to a hospital where he died.

All the accused were arrested on the day of the incident and have been in custody since.

In court, prosecutor Lizelle September told the court that the state intended to oppose their bail application; however, the three abandoned the application and remain in custody.

The matter was postponed to March 30 for further investigations.
